What a free AI companion gives you, and what paying adds
Almost every AI companion app advertises itself as free. Almost every one of them also has a paid plan, and the free version is designed to show you what you are missing. That is not a scam; running language and image models costs real money, and free tiers are how apps let you try before you buy. But it helps to know where the line usually sits.
This page explains what free tiers typically include, what paid plans add, and how to work out whether paying makes sense. Specific limits differ between apps and change over time, so check the current pricing page of whichever app you are considering.
What free tiers usually include
A free tier is a sample. Expect most of these:
- Text chat, often with a daily or total message limit
- A choice of ready-made characters, sometimes with a basic character builder
- Short memory, meaning the character may forget earlier parts of the conversation
- A few images, or blurred or low-resolution previews
- No voice, or a single sample
Some apps also show adverts or upgrade prompts inside the chat. A free tier is enough to judge whether you like the writing style and the interface. It is rarely enough to judge memory or image quality properly.
What paying adds
Paid plans unlock the features that cost the app the most to run:
| Feature | Free tier (typical) | Paid tier (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Messages | Limited per day | Unlimited or much higher limit |
| Memory | Short, may reset | Longer, sometimes across chats |
| Custom characters | Basic or limited | Full builder, more slots |
| Images | A few, or previews | Monthly allowance via credits |
| Voice | None or sample | Voice messages, sometimes calls |
| Privacy controls | Same as paid, usually | Same, sometimes extra options |
The jump in memory is often the most noticeable change. A companion that remembers your earlier conversations feels very different from one that does not. How AI companions work explains why memory is expensive.
The credit layer
Many apps combine a subscription with credits or tokens. The subscription unlocks features; the credits pay for each image, voice message or other heavy action. Your plan includes a monthly allowance, and you can buy more.
This is where costs can creep up. A few things to watch:
- Credits per action vary. An image may cost several times more than a voice message, and higher quality settings may cost more again.
- Allowances may not roll over. Unused credits often expire at the end of the month.
- Bought credits may be non-refundable. Read the terms before buying large packs.
The same logic applies on cam sites, where tokens pay for tips and private shows. Our token costs guide shows how to convert any token price into real money, and the method works for companion credits too.
Hidden costs of free
Free is not free of trade-offs:
- Your data. Free users’ chats may be used to improve models. Check the privacy policy; the privacy guide explains what to look for.
- Your time. Message limits and upgrade prompts interrupt conversations, which some people find more frustrating than paying.
- Unofficial “free” apps. Apps or websites that promise all premium features for free are often low quality, ad-heavy or unsafe. Stick to apps with clear terms, a real company behind them and a published content policy.
When paying is worth it
Paying tends to make sense if:
- you have used the free tier for a while and keep coming back
- you hit the message limit regularly
- memory and image consistency matter to you
- you have checked the cancellation process and know you can stop easily
Staying free makes sense if you chat occasionally, mainly want to explore, or are still comparing apps. There is no reason to subscribe to several at once.
How to try a paid plan sensibly
- Use the free tier on two or three apps first. Our companion app comparison has a checklist.
- Pick one and buy the shortest plan, usually monthly.
- Note the renewal date in your calendar.
- Track how many credits you use in the first two weeks.
- Decide before the renewal date whether to continue, downgrade or cancel.
Annual plans offer a lower monthly rate, but only commit once you are sure. If you want to keep the charge off a main card, paying discreetly covers prepaid and virtual cards and what shows on your statement.
Candy.ai and OurDream.ai
Both follow the pattern described here: a free sample, then a subscription that unlocks more memory, images and other features, with credits for heavier use. Their exact allowances and prices change, so compare them on their current pricing pages. Our Candy.ai vs OurDream.ai page explains how to test both side by side.
Keeping it in proportion
Paid plans make companions more engaging, which is the point, and also a reason to set yourself a monthly budget. If spending or time creeps beyond what you intended, see healthy boundaries for simple limits that help.
