Candy.ai or OurDream.ai? How the two companion apps differ
Candy.ai and OurDream.ai are two of the most visible AI companion apps for adults. They overlap a lot: both let you chat with a character, customise how it looks and behaves, and generate images of it. The differences are in emphasis, interface and pricing structure, and those details shift as both companies update their products.
This page explains how to compare them fairly. We describe each app in general terms and point out what to check yourself, because a feature list that was accurate three months ago may not be today.
If you have not used a companion app before, how AI companions work is a useful primer, and our general companion app checklist applies to both.
What they have in common
Both apps are built on the same basic parts:
- A language model that writes the character’s replies
- A persona layer that tells the model who the character is: name, personality, backstory, speaking style
- Some form of memory so the character can refer back to earlier conversation
- An image model that produces pictures of the character on request
- A paid plan that unlocks most image generation and other premium features, usually combined with credits or tokens
Both are adults-only services with content rules, and both offer a limited free experience before asking you to subscribe.
Where they tend to differ
The points below describe the general positioning of each app. Verify them on the app itself before deciding.
Candy.ai
Candy.ai is known for a large library of ready-made characters alongside a character builder. Its focus is on the companion experience: chat, voice messages and images of a consistent character. Paid plans have typically combined a monthly subscription with a monthly allowance of tokens that are spent on images and some other extras.
Things to check on Candy.ai:
- how many tokens your plan includes and what an image or voice message costs in tokens
- how well the character remembers details across separate chats
- whether your custom characters and images stay private
OurDream.ai
OurDream.ai puts more weight on building your own character and scenario. It is often described as closer to a roleplay and character-creation tool, with chat and image generation around that. It also uses a subscription with limits or credits for heavier features.
Things to check on OurDream.ai:
- how detailed the character builder is and whether you can edit a character after creating it
- what the image allowance is on each plan
- how scenarios and roleplay settings carry over between sessions
Side by side: what to compare
| Area | What to look at on each app |
|---|---|
| Ready-made characters | Size and variety of the library |
| Custom characters | Depth of appearance and personality controls |
| Memory | Recall across chats, editable memory |
| Images | Consistency, control over scenes, cost per image |
| Voice | Availability, tier, cost per message |
| Free use | How much you can do before paying |
| Pricing | Subscription price, included credits, extra credit cost |
| Cancellation | In-app cancel, access until end of period |
| Privacy | Training use, deletion, data location |
The honest answer is that neither app is better in every column. Which one suits you depends on whether you value a big library and a polished companion feel, or deeper control over a character you build yourself.
Comparing the pricing models
Both apps mix subscriptions with some kind of credit. That makes direct price comparison tricky, because the cheapest headline plan may not be the cheapest for how you actually use it.
A simple way to compare:
- Estimate how many images and voice messages you would use in a normal month.
- On each app’s pricing page, find how many of those your plan includes.
- Add the cost of any extra credits you would need.
- Compare monthly totals, and note any annual plan discount and whether it is refundable.
Annual plans look cheaper per month but lock you in. If you are not sure you will still be using the app in three months, start monthly. Our page on free vs paid companions covers what free tiers usually include, and paying discreetly explains what appears on your statement and how auto-renewal works.
Privacy and data
Both companies store your chats and generated images on their servers, because that is how memory and galleries work. Before you get attached to a character, read each privacy policy for:
- whether chats are used to train or improve models
- whether you can delete individual chats, images and your account
- which country the company operates from
Use an email address you do not use elsewhere if you want separation. The privacy guide has a step-by-step setup.
How to choose
Try both on their free tiers before paying for either. A useful test:
- Create a character on each with the same description.
- Chat for fifteen to twenty minutes, mentioning a few specific details about yourself.
- Come back the next day and see which one remembers more, and which conversation feels more natural.
- Generate a few images (if the free tier allows) and compare consistency.
- Read the cancellation and privacy terms.
Then pick the one you prefer and start with the shortest plan. You can always switch.
A note on expectations
Both apps produce convincing conversation, but neither is a person and neither promises a particular experience. Characters can forget things, contradict themselves or produce images that miss the brief.
